Kanban allows Lean and JIT manufacturing lines to smoothly run a pull system with a well-planned production schedule. Developed as part of the Toyota Production System, Kanban is a signaling system used to manage inventory, trigger action, and facilitate communication between departments.

In a pull system, processing is based on actual customer demand rather than the traditional method of forecasting demand; it ensures the production line produces only what is deliverable. Every item moving down the line should be accompanied by a Kanban. The first Kanban Toyota used was a card, but now organizations also use bins and electronic systems, and some companies even use golf balls!

The core principles of Kanban are:

  1. Visualize: Kanban cards and bins are the visual signal to trigger work and Kanban boards help to visualize every piece of work (and where it's at in the process) all in one central informational hub.
  2. Limit WIP: Having a maximum limit of work-in-progress will keep the production line from exceeding capacity, allowing employees to keep an optimal pace of work. Limiting WIP also prevents wasteful bottlenecks while creating a smooth flow of resources.
  3. Focus on Flow: Once a Kanban system is in place and a limit for WIP has been established, it's important to look at how work is moving around the facility. Create a value stream map and identify where flow is stalling, implement solutions, check for improvements, and repeat.
  4. Continuous Improvement: Kanban is an ongoing strategy with no real end goal. This is a system that will always be running and always have room for improvement, so it will be important to approach it with a Kaizen frame of mind.
